The year is 2294. Captain Kirk, the most famous starship captain in history, was lost during the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise-B just last year. A tense peace treaty with the Klingons is leading to a dismantling of several border stations. The Romulans, no one has heard from them since the end of the Khitomer Conference, but they still lurk around every nebula.

All is not so grim, though. New technologies have made their way to the front lines. The venerable Constitution-class, half a century old but still proving to be a useful design, crawls the spaceways after the last of the refits are complete. The Excelsior-class starship, though not the promised transwarp ship the Federation was expecting, is proving itself to be a hearty ship. New stations are being constructed, based on the Earth Spacedock design and are marvels to behold. With Starfleet's new inventory, they seek to open a new age of exploration and discovery, pushing the borders of understanding beyond what we know.

NEO is set in the end of the 23rd century, after the events of the opening of Star Trek Generations, at the beginning of one of the longest unknown gaps in Star Trek lore: what happened in between Kirk's disappearance and the events of The Next Generation. Advancing in a normal time progression, NEO sets out to start filling in the canon gaps: meeting the Cardassians, Bajorans, Talarians, Breen and many more for the first time, the Romulan isolation, the tumultuous first years of peace with the Klingons, contact with the Gorn and Tholians, and many more events that shaped a universe created by the Great Bird of the Galaxy.
